FAQ about Coaching

Why hire a coach?

Please take a moment to answer these questions right now:

  1. How is your life today?
  2. What's working for you?
  3. What do you want more of?
  4. What have you been afraid to ask for?
  5. What are your dreams, and how long have they been on your "to do" list?
  6. What gets in the way of getting the results you want?

Your answers to these questions indicate gaps between where you are now and where you want to be with your life. People hire coaches to help them bridge the gap more quickly than they might otherwise.

It's really OK to ask for help sometimes.

Here are a few areas that you may need work on...

How can I be sure coaching will work for me?

You can't without trying it. Some people are not coachable. Many who are not initially coachable have personality shifts and then benefit greatly from the coaching process. It usually takes from one to three months to start seeing results. Are you coachable?

What is coaching?

Just as a tennis coach can help you reach peak performance in tennis, I can help you to get the best out of your whole life, and help you to turn your dreams and visions into reality.

Coaching is a form of consulting. Like a consultant, a coach helps you and/or your company to:

In addition to the above, I stay with you to:

What do I need to understand?

Because coaching and the coaching process is so new, few clients know how to best utilize their coach. Some of the points you need to understand are:

Having great sessions is important, but it's not the "quality" of the session that's most important. Rather, it's how well you integrate and use what was discussed between sessions.

Why does it work?

Coaching works because it brings out your best. I believe you have the answers and I'm trained to bring those answers out (relatively painlessly)! I'm your partner who has no competing agenda other than your success. So, my job is to help you find truth.

You could also say that coaching contains elements of counseling, goal-setting, business advice, relationship work, and yet it is more than this too. It's like having someone who encourages you to get the best for yourself, and helps you to stay on track.

What are some of the benefits?

As your coach, I could help you to:

I think those are all great benefits, but here are more!

What happens in a coaching session?

Specifically, this is what I do with you during our coaching sessions:

Listen.
I listen fully. You are the focus. I listen to what you say, what you are trying to say, and what you are not saying, what you intended to say, plus how you say or don't say all this.
Input.
Provide advice, ideas, comments and views on your situation, dilemma or opportunity.
Co-Create.
We work together to create the environment you need to advance toward your goals and dreams. This may take many forms, including laying the foundation for giving you the permission and support needed to take new and sometimes extraordinary, fact-based new risks.
Endorse.
Anyone who's up to changing something in their life--an entrepreneur, a manager with an extraordinary objective, a professional filling the practice--needs an outside voice full of acknowledgment of the magnificence of your goal. Validation, holding the light on your gifts, and endorsement of who you are and what you are up to is so important. It's a gift to have a regular source of this. Yet, I don't perform as a "yes" type person, but as someone who knows what it takes to achieve.
Suggest.
I want a lot for you. I want you to be healthy, happy and successful; to be on a strong financial track; to enjoy family and friends. I want you to have a life that inspires others--and yourself. Part of my job is to be a least 3 steps ahead of you, yet be with you. As such, I make requests and suggestions and you, as the expert on you, decide if these will forward you and how these may be a good investment. Together we work toward implementation.
Follow-Up/Follow-Through.
Coaching provides a great venue for you to use to complete and follow-through with your dreams and goals for yourself. While I am NOT ever the taskmaster, just having the regularly appointed time to check in, recharge, and refurbish or redesign, by its very nature, fosters follow-through.

How do we meet?

Telecoaching (what I do) is a regular, on-going process, which takes place by telephone. Sessions are scheduled at the same time and on the same day of each of the first three weeks of the month. You initiate the call and come prepared with whatever you want to deal with. Sessions last 30 minutes.

As part of the service, you are encouraged to call, e-mail, or leave me voicemails anytime during our coaching relationship. There is no extra charge for this. I will return calls for short question/answer exchanges during the time between our telecoaching sessions at no extra charge.

We work on a month-to-month basis, and you can stop anytime. (Though it is recommended that you commit to spending at least three months with a coach at the beginning. When you see the progress you make by that time, you'll probably want to stick with it for longer.)

Should I tell people I have a coach?

I recommend that you at least tell the people closest to you that you have a coach and that you'll be making some changes in your life. This will serve two purposes for you:

  1. They will know what's going on when the changes start occurring.
  2. They can be a support in your life while you're growing.

However, you make the decision about who you tell, and when.
